The Program
The Sexual Medicine Program is dedicated to the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of men and women with disorders of sexual function. The program is headed by Dr. John Mulhall, a board-certified urologist who is specially trained in sexual and reproductive dysfunction. The program specializes in the care of the following disorders:
For the Female
- Libido problems
- Lubrication problems
- Orgasm problems
- Sexual pain disorders
The program has associated with it specialists in other areas of medicine related to the field of sexual function, such as neurology, endocrinology, cardiology, sleep medicine, psychology and psychiatry. The program has at its disposal state-of-the-art equipment for the investigation of the above conditions. The investigations available include:
- Biothesiometry
- Duplex Doppler penile ultrasound
- Dynamic infusion cavernosometry and cavernosography
- Selective internal pudendal arteriography
- Nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity monitoring
- Somatosensory evoked potentials
- Pudendal electromyography
The program is actively involved in clinical trials assessing new drugs and devices for the treatment of various sexual dysfunctions. The program has extensive experience with various forms of drug and device therapies for sexual dysfunction including:
- Viagra
- MUSE (Transurethral prostaglandin suppository)
- Penile injection therapy
- Medications for premature ejaculation
- Medications for painful orgasm
- Vacuum devices
Dr. Mulhall is an experienced sexual function surgeon who has expertise performing the following operations:
- Penile implant surgery
- Penile artery bypass surgery (revascularization)
- Venous ligation surgery
- Penile curvature correction surgery
- Peyronie's plaque incision/excision and grafting surgery
- Vasectomy reversal
- Varicocele ligation
- Sperm extraction
The philosophy of the program is to tailor treatment to the individual patient and to encourage patients and their partners to be pro-active in the decision-making regarding treatment. All patients are strongly encouraged to bring their partner to the initial consultation with Dr. Mulhall.
The Personnel
John P. Mulhall, M.D., is the Director of the Sexual Medicine Program and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College Of Cornell University. Dr. Mulhall also has a joint appointment with the Department of Urology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He received his fellowship subspecialty training in Male Sexual and Reproductive Dysfunction at Boston University School of Medicine. He arrived in New York from Loyola University Medical Center, Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago where he spent 6 years.
Dr. Mulhall also directs the Sexual Medicine Research Laboratory at Cornell. This laboratory is involved in the study of Peyronie's disease and the impact of nerve injury during radical prostatectomy on erectile tissue structure and function. Other research being conducted presently includes studies of erectile dysfunction as a predictor of coronary artery disease; preserving erectile function after radical prostatectomy; sleep disorder-associated erectile dysfunction; and testosterone supplementation in males and females with sexual dysfunction.
At the recent biannual meeting of the International Society For Sex And Impotence Research, Dr. Mulhall was awarded the prestigious and highly competitive Jean-Francois Ginestie Award for basic science research. This coveted prize was awarded for his laboratory research on the cause of Peyronie's disease, specifically for a project entitled "Peyronie's disease fibroblasts demonstrate tumnorigenicity in the SCID mouse model."
He is the recipient of many other research awards, is on numerous committees of national and international organizations pertaining to his specialty. He is actively involved in erectile dysfunction pharmaceutical development and is on the advisory boards of numerous companies involved in the development of new erectile dysfunction therapies. He is an internationally recognized speaker on the subject of sexual dysfunction and has published extensively on topics related to his field of expertise.
Dr. Michael A. Perelman is the Co-Director of the Human Sexuality
Program, Payne Whitney Clinic of the New York Presbyterian Hospital in
New York City. He has been affiliated with this program, founded by his
late mentor Dr. Helen S. Kaplan, for over twenty-five years. He holds a
joint appointment on the faculty in both Psychiatry and in Urology at
Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He also is the Senior
Consulting Psychologist/Sex Therapist at the NY Center for Human
Sexuality, holding an appointment in the Department of Urology, Columbia
University, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Additionally, he is
the Senior Consulting Sex Therapist to the Department of Urology at
Greenwich Hospital.
A National Institute of Mental Health Fellow, he received his MS,
M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from Columbia
University, writing the first sex therapy doctoral dissertation in
Columbia's history. Dr. Perelman was Chief Intern in Medical Psychology
at Duke University Medical Center. He was a 1974 Postdoctoral Fellow in
sex therapy at Cornell's Human Sexuality Program of the Payne Whitney
Clinic, New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Perelman is a New York State certified psychologist and is listed in
the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He
maintains an independent practice in Manhattan, specializing in sex and
marital therapy. He is certified by the American Association of Sex
Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) as a sex educator,
therapist and supervisor. He has served on several boards of directors
including The Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR) and AASECT.
He is a member of over twenty other professional societies, including
the American Psychological Association, the American Urological
Association (AUA), the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex (SSSS),
the International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (ISSIR), and
the International Society for Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH).
He has served as consulting editor for a variety of professional
journals, currently including the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy.
He co-authored Late Bloomers, published by Macmillan, with Carol Colman.
Dr. Perelman has published a number of chapters in sex
therapy texts and has presented numerous papers at professional
meetings, as well as having his work in sex and marital therapy
frequently featured in the media.
Patricia Guhring, RN, BSN, is the coordinator of the sexual dysfunction treatment program, supervising patient training and education in a number of areas, including penile injection therapy, urethral suppository therapy (MUSE) and penile prosthesis training. She has an extensive background in patient care and pharmacologic programs. Carolyn Valentino is the practice manager for the program and is the person responsible for the scheduling of office, procedure and surgery appointments. She is a native New Yorker and has been on the staff in the Department of Urology at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University since 1992. Initial Consultation
Dr. Mulhall sees patients in the Brady Urologic Health Center on the 9th floor of the Starr Building at New York Presbyterian Hospital (room number Starr 900). All appointments are made through Carolyn Valentino (212.746.5653) and she can give you directions. Your car may be valeted at the front entrance to the hospital. As previously mentioned you are strongly encouraged to bring your partner to the initial consultation with Dr. Mulhall. Upon arrival you will be asked to register (if you have not previously done so at this institution) and complete the questionnaires. Therefore, we suggest that you arrive 20-30 minutes prior to the time of your scheduled appointment. It is important that you bring with you all records pertaining to the problem for which you are seeing Dr. Mulhall. These items may include laboratory results, radiology reports (or films), notes from previous consultations and a list of all medications that you are currently using. If you are uncertain what items to bring with you please ask the staff prior to your arrival. Following the consultation, Dr. Mulhall will make recommendations regarding testing and treatment. Should blood-work be required this may be conducted in the Brady Urologic Health Center. Generally any further testing will need to be scheduled for a later date. If you are going to be late for an appointment, we ask that you call and inform us of this. While we try to be accommodating, however, in this circumstance you may need to be rescheduled. We ask that you give us at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

If you call outside of office hours the call will be directed to the answering service, where you can leave a message or should there be an emergency, have a physician contact you immediately. Every effort is made to return phone calls promptly. However, phone calls are triaged with the most urgent ones being addressed first.
Billing Information
The only health insurance plans billed directly by Dr. Mulhall are Medicare, PHCS, and BC/BS. Patients covered by all other insurance plans are expected to provide payment for office visits and procedures at the time of service. It is the responsibility of non-Medicare, PHCS, and BC/BS patients to submit their bills to their insurance carrier for reimbursement. Fees for office consultation can be obtained from the scheduling staff prior to the office visit. We accept most credit cards and also accept personal checks. We do not accept cash payment.
