Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy is occasionally used to treat kidney cancer. Radiation therapy is sometimes used as the treatment for kidney cancer for people whose general health is too poor to undergo surgery. Radiation therapy can also be used to temporarily ease symptoms of kidney cancer such as pain, bleeding, or problems caused by metastases, especially in the area where the radiation beam can reach without damaging other organs such as painful bony metastatses.
Unfortunately, RCCs are not very sensitive to radiation. Use of radiation therapy before or after removing the cancer is not routinely recommended, because studies have not shown any improvement in survival rates.
