The Brady Urologic Health Center

The mission of the Brady Urologic Health Center is to provide unequalled urologic care in a compassionate setting. Compassionate setting is an understatement when you view the new location in the Starr Pavilion. Previously, the center was located in the F pavilion, however, the Center has moved to a newly reconstructed 8000 square foot suite in Starr 900 on the ninth floor of New York Presbyterian Hospital.

LobbyThe New Facility
The process of developing the Starr 9 site focused on incorporating the needs of patients and creating a more comfortable environment. This new location consists of plentiful new examination rooms, patient waiting rooms that allow appropriate privacy, and a state-of-the-art procedure room. The procedure room maintains modern technology that enables numerous procedures to be provided in a safe and timely manner.

Small waiting area The Brady Urologic Health Center is a modern facility offering a full range of outpatient urologic services. This space has allowed the Department to provide the most advanced care available within the field. The sophisticated design has provided for additional and more comfortable private rooms and treatment rooms. There is now more room to accommodate the volume of patients, as well as the support needed for the Department. There are four new waiting rooms. First and foremost, there is the main waiting room where patients check in with the Receptionist. At their leisure, patients are now able to surf the internet through a computer provided solely for their use while they wait to be called in for their appointment. Further, there are three more private subwaiting areas provided for patients to wait for their individual physician. This setting provides a calm and private environment for patients to receive the highest quality care from a team of caring physicians and health care professionals.

ComputerPractice Specialties
There are nine physicians practicing in the Brady Urologic Health Center, now working together in a more close knit department. These physicians are some of the most renowned and respected Urologists in America who specialize in all different areas of Urology, including prostate disease, oncology, male and female sexual dysfunction, male infertility, stone disease, and urologic laparoscopy. Each physician practicing in the Starr 900 facility specializes in treating a variety of urologic dysfunctions and are nationally known for their expertise in each area of the field.

More Facility Developments

New facilities for the Institute for Bladder and Prostate Health and the Institute for Pediatric Urology are under renovation. The Bladder and Prostate Health Center opened in October of 2004, and the Institute for Pediatric Urology is scheduled to open in 2007.

Institute for Bladder and Prostate Health

The Bladder and Prostate Health Center will now comprise a sense of patient comfort, positive productive service and plentiful treatment options, many of which were developed by our physicians! The center will also incorporate two divisions.

Brady Prostate Center
The Brady Prostate Center specializes in the evaluation and treatment of a wide range of prostate problems including evaluation of benign prostatic enlargement, prostatitis and abnormal PSA results. All modern technologies available for evaluation and treatment of patients with prostate problems are available at this facility. This includes a full range of minimally invasive treatments including lasers such as the prostate vaporization (green light/KTP) laser prostatectomy procedure, full video urodynamics testing, microwave prostate thermotherapies, transurethral needle ablation prostate therapies and other novel treatment approaches to facilitate effective, minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. There are also various clinical trials enabling patients to explore new ways to evaluate and treat BPH, prostatitis, as well as prevent prostate cancer

Female Urology Center

The Female Urology division specializes in assessing and treating urinary problems affecting women, with coordinating care in urologic problems with gynecologic specialists. This center is uniquely staffed by physicians with urology and uro-gynecology training. Female patients can be evaluated for conditions as simple as bladder infections or blood in the urine, to more involved problems with bladder control, or complex conditions involving prolapse ("droppage") of the pelvic organs. Simple non-invasive methods as well as the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment is available in a comfortable and patient friendly setting. Therapy may involve muscle training, medication, or a simple office procedure - all available at this facility. The physicians on staff have been trained in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques - and in fact, the SPARC procedure for incontinence was developed by one of our physicians, as well as complicated reconstructive surgery. In addition, the center is an active site of research and there are many other novel treatments and clinical trials that are available for patients to consider and participate in this center surrounding overactive bladder and urinary incontinence.

This new facility features two state-of-the-art video urodynamic rooms, a suite of physician treatment rooms, pelvic floor therapy room, advanced digital endoscopic and imaging equipment, and an area devoted to the many clinicial technologies and investigations that allow state of the art voiding dysfunction evaluation, treatment and research.

The new facility for the Institute will be built to provide a compassionate and fun setting for all children with urologic problems. The space will consist of treatment rooms encompassing pediatric video urodynamics and biofeedback, allowing for patient privacy and treatment of children in a nurturing environment. Additional examination rooms, physician and staff office space, a patient waiting room encompassing a play area, and space for the continuation of groundbreaking clinical and basic science research on pediatric urology will be provided in the new facility as well.

Leadership of the Department of Urology
Drs. Schlegel & Vaughan

Dr. Peter N. Schlegel became Chairman of the Deparment of Urology on November 18, 2003. Dr. Schlegel succeeded E. Darracott Vaughan, Jr., M.D., Chairman Emeritus and a long-standing leader in the field of Urology.

Dr. Schlegel trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Urology and his research helped provide the anatomical basis for "nerve-sparing" procedures for removal of bladder and prostate tumors early in his career. His subsequent research and clinical studies allowed advances in the treatment of men with infertility. Dr. Schlegel has published studies that have helped define the genetic causes and characteristics of men with the most severe forms of infertility. He has also developed new techniques that optimize the chance of sperm retrieval from men with no sperm in the ejaculate. These sperm can then effectively be used for assisted reproduction (IVF, ICSI) to allow these men, previously considered sterile, to become fathers. Dr. Schlegel has also demonstrated the value of genetic testing of men to better define the chance of sperm retrieval for men with azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate.) In addition, Dr. Schlegel did some of the contemporary work in outcomes research for male infertility, documenting the benefit of specific treatments for infertile men. Dr. Schlegel has been Acting Chairman of the Department for the last 28 months at Cornell, succeeding Dr. Darracott Vaughan, who served as Chair for over 20 years. Under Dr. Vaughan's leadership, the Department developed strength in multiple areas of Urology and grew to be one of the most respected Urology Centers in the country.

Dr. Schlegel has further expanded the Department's areas of excellence in voiding problems (including female urology and prostatic diseases), increased Pediatric Urology staff, and further expanded the Department's excellence with formalized studies on outcomes of treatment of urologic conditions. The Department has taken its excellence in Men's Health studies further by expanding the areas of Male Infertility, Sexual Dysfunction, and evaluation and treatment of hormone deficiency in men. Taken together with management of men with benign prostate problems, the Urology Department at Cornell continues to be a leader in the treatment of all Urologic conditions in men and women. Expansion of the area of Urologic Oncology has allowed the Weill Cornell Medical Center to be nationally and internationally recognized as a site for outstanding care in robotic prostatectomy. In addition, the Urologic Oncology group also provides optimal care of patients with bladder, prostate, kidney, and other urologic cancers. The Weill Cornell Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital is the most advanced center in the region for minimally invasive treatment of kidney tumors as well as removal of kidneys for transplantation.

Dr. Vaughan, former AUA President, serves as Senior Associate Dean of Cornell's Weill Medical College
Dr. Vaughan, long-standing leader of the Department of Urology at Cornell, served as President of the AUA from 2001-2002 (AUA; American Urological Association, the largest national professional group for urologists in the United States.) His prior work in organized urology is extensive, including service as President of the American Urological Association, co-developer of the American Foundation for Urologic Diseases, Inc., a patient education and research arm for urologic care, as well as extensive work on The American Board of Urology and numerous other important professional groups.

Dr. Vaughan's national responsibilities led him to step down as Chairman of the Department in 2001, where he has led Cornell to a top-10 listing of all urology departments in the country, as rated by US News & World Report. He has continued to serve as Chairman Emeritus and remains an important teacher and clinician in the Department. It is expected that he will remain an important force in New York for the care of patients with urologic conditions.
